Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is a unique property and unlike any other luxury safari lodge that I have visited. It is literally built into it’s natural surroundings and blends seamlessly into the environment.
Decor is in a subdued blend of earthy tones complimenting the bushveld and every one of the 13 luxury suites has it’s own private plunge pool. The lodge has been recognized as one of the most environmentally sensitive lodges in South Africa.
The spa here practices holistic treatments and offers a variety of body, skin and beauty rituals. There is an outdoor mediation area and for wine lovers, a 6000 bottle wine cellar featuring many rare varieties. Or if you prefer, just sit back and cool your toes off in the lounge area at tea time in between game drives!
Game viewing was abundant here on both game drives and walking safari’s. Our Game Ranger Mike, and Shangaan tracker, expertly led us on a walk through the bush where we came upon a few young male bull elephants. It was exhilarating to be so close to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitat.
This young bull was in the beginning of musth (also referred to as must) so we kept our distance. When in musth males can become quite aggressive due to an increase on testosterone. We were still in a vehicle when we spotted this big fella.
Game drives were just as plentiful and we enjoyed finding many zebra, elephant, leopard rhino and lion. Just before sundowners, we encountered three large male lions slowly waking up for what was sure to be a busy evening!
After an immersive evening game drive and sundowners, we returned to Earth Lodge to enjoy a wonderful dinner in the Boma under the African Sky. Traditionally, a Boma was used as a fenced in area to keep livestock, but in todays luxury safari era, it is a gathering place for guests to enjoy a wonderful meal served outdoors by the light of lanterns and a central fire, lit from above by the stars and moon. A must for any safari!
To add to the experience, the Earth Lodge staff performed a traditional song and dance for all of the guests. It was a fabulous evening!
